Last updated: 18 October 2026 · By Alan Spicer, YouTube Certified Expert and former vidIQ Customer Success team member

If you’re searching “vidIQ review”, you want two answers: will it help my channel grow, and is it worth paying for? This review answers both from an unusual position. I worked on vidIQ’s Customer Success team, I’ve used it on my own and client channels since, and I’ve watched hundreds of creators either get real value from it or waste their subscription. Here’s what it’s good at, where it falls short, and who should pay for it.

THE VERDICT

vidIQ: 4.5 / 5 ★★★★½

One of the strongest research and planning tools for YouTube. It won’t grow your channel by itself, but for choosing topics, packaging videos and learning from competitors, it earns its place. Start on the free plan and upgrade to Boost when you’re uploading every week.

Why trust this review?

I’m Alan Spicer, a YouTube Certified Expert with six YouTube Silver Play Buttons, 500+ channel audits behind me and 20 years of self-employment. From 2020 to 2021 I worked on vidIQ’s Customer Success team, coaching more than 400 creators in-house. I’ve since grown channels like Coin Bureau Trading (15K to 100K+ in eight months) and Woof & Joy (300K+ in under ten months). I’m a vidIQ affiliate, which I flag wherever a link pays me, and the downsides are in here too. See client results.

⚡ QUICK ANSWER: Is vidIQ worth it?

For creators who upload every week, yes. Its keyword research, competitor data and AI Coach help you choose better topics and package videos better, and the paid plan usually pays for itself once you act on that. It isn’t a growth shortcut. Start on the free plan and upgrade only when you hit its limits.

What is vidIQ?

vidIQ is a YouTube research and optimisation platform. It works through a Chrome extension that adds data to YouTube pages, a web dashboard and mobile apps. Creators use it to research topics and keywords, check titles and descriptions, study competitors and spot trends early.

It launched in 2011, founded by Rob Sandie and Todd Troxell, and in 2013 it was verified by YouTube after passing its certification programme. Today it sits alongside TubeBuddy as one of the two best-known YouTube tools.

The idea that runs through this review: vidIQ is a decision tool, not a growth shortcut. It won’t make videos for you or guarantee views. It gives you better information faster, so your choices about what to make and how to package it are better than gut feel alone.

My history with vidIQ: the inside view

I used vidIQ for years before I worked there. I was running several channels and hitting the problem every creator hits: how do you know what to make next? YouTube Studio showed me what had already happened. It didn’t show me which topics were underserved, what competitors ranked for, or what was rising in my niche that week. vidIQ did.

In 2020 I joined vidIQ’s Customer Success team. I wasn’t building the product. My job was working with creators: answering their questions, running one-to-one sessions and seeing how real people used the tool. Over that time I coached more than 400 creators in-house.

That changed how I think about content strategy. The creators who grew fastest weren’t always the best filmmakers. They were the ones who made deliberate choices backed by data, picked three or four features that suited their niche, and used them every week. The ones who stalled usually had the same tools but treated the scores as the goal instead of making videos.

I left in 2021 to focus on my own channels and consultancy. I still use vidIQ every week and recommend it to most of the creators I work with. That’s not loyalty to a former employer. I’ve tried the alternatives and keep coming back because it suits how I research.

The vidIQ features that matter

Here’s where each main feature saves time, where it helps you decide, and where your own judgement still has to do the work.

Feature What it does well Where to be careful Best for
Keyword research Shows demand and competition side by side Volumes are estimates, so compare rather than trust one number Evergreen and tutorial content
Daily Ideas and trends Surfaces rising topics in your niche fast A trending topic isn’t always right for your audience Filling a content calendar
AI Coach Answers questions using your channel data Uses AI credits, so heavy users can run short Working out why videos win or lose
Competitor tracking Shows what’s overperforming for rivals Learn the pattern; don’t copy the video Positioning and gap-finding
Outlier score and VPH Puts views in context of a channel’s normal results Early VPH can swing a lot Spotting proven topics
SEO score Catches weak titles and thin descriptions before publishing A high score won’t save a weak video Pre-publish checks
Title, thumbnail and description AI Quick first drafts and ideas Rewrite in your voice or you’ll sound like everyone else Breaking a blank page
Tag tools Shows tags other videos use YouTube says tags play a minimal role Covering misspellings

Features from vidIQ’s plans page, October 2026. Tag guidance from YouTube Help.

The value here is speed. What would take an hour of manual searching and cross-checking takes a few minutes, and across a full content calendar that time adds up. Pair the keyword data with a strong thumbnail and title and you’re improving the whole package a viewer sees. Every feature has its own walkthrough in the ultimate vidIQ guide.

How vidIQ fits into real YouTube growth

vidIQ doesn’t grow channels on its own. What it does well is cut guesswork, speed up research and show you patterns you’d otherwise miss. Used properly, that means better topic choices, sharper packaging and faster iteration. Used badly, it turns into checking scores instead of publishing.

The creators who get most from it treat vidIQ as the research layer of a bigger system, alongside understanding how the algorithm works, reading your analytics properly and following a real growth strategy. The tool improves your inputs. You still have to make the videos.

vidIQ free vs paid: what changes

vidIQ’s free plan is a real product, not a locked demo. Paid plans mostly buy you depth, more AI credits and time saved.

Plan AI credits per month What it adds Best for
Free 150 Niche trends, content ideas, AI Coach tips Learning the tool
Boost 2,000 Unlimited trends research, optimisation tools, thumbnails, subscriber insights, deeper AI Coach Creators uploading every week
Max 6,000 Everything in Boost, more AI Coach usage, Max Mode AI, more Shorts clipping Heavy AI users, larger channels
Boost + Coaching As Boost One-to-one coaching with a vidIQ coach Creators who want a guide
Enterprise Custom Every channel, team roles, cross-channel reporting Agencies and networks

Source: vidIQ plans page, October 2026.

Old reviews still list Pro: vidIQ no longer sells a Pro plan. Any review that prices Pro, or claims Boost covers five channels and Max covers unlimited channels for a fixed price, is out of date.

My upgrade rule: if YouTube is part of your business, Boost usually pays for itself in hours saved. If you’re just starting, use the free plan for a month first. Upgrade when you keep hitting its limits, not before.

vidIQ pricing and current offers

vidIQ shows prices in your local currency and revises them often, so I don’t quote a figure that will be wrong next month. Yearly billing works out cheaper per month than paying monthly. Check the live price on vidIQ’s plans page before you buy.

Three offers are worth knowing about:

  • Boost for $1 for your first month through my partner link.
  • UNLOCK2026: vidIQ’s own code for 25% off a new Boost monthly plan, listed on its offer page.
  • A 7-day free trial of Boost yearly for new customers, per the vidIQ Help Centre.

Offers can’t be combined. The full rules are in my vidIQ coupon guide, and plan-by-plan detail is in vidIQ pricing explained and Free vs Boost vs Max.

vidIQ vs TubeBuddy

The better question isn’t “which is best” but “how do you work?” They lead in different places.

Focus area vidIQ TubeBuddy
Topic and keyword research Strong Moderate
Trend spotting Strong Limited
Competitor intelligence Strong Moderate
AI help using your channel data Strong (AI Coach) Moderate
Thumbnail and title split tests Limited Strong
Bulk edits and templates Moderate Strong

Choose vidIQ if your problem is finding the right topics and angles. Choose TubeBuddy if it’s managing and improving a big back catalogue. Plenty of serious creators run both. Worth knowing: YouTube Studio now has its own built-in thumbnail testing, which narrows TubeBuddy’s lead on split tests. Full comparisons: vidIQ vs TubeBuddy and my TubeBuddy review.

vidIQ vs Social Blade, Morningfame and YouTube Studio

Tool What it’s for How it compares with vidIQ
Social Blade Public stats and growth history for any channel Tracks numbers but doesn’t help plan videos. Most creators use it alongside vidIQ
Morningfame Guided keyword research and channel analytics Simpler and narrower. vidIQ covers its ground plus competitors, trends and AI
YouTube Studio Official data on your own channel Essential and free, but inward-looking. Use both
Keyword Tool.io Large keyword lists from autocomplete Good for volume of ideas, without vidIQ’s competition or competitor data

vidIQ pros and cons

Pros

  • Keyword research with competition data in one view
  • Outlier score makes competitor research quick
  • AI Coach answers questions using your own data
  • A free plan that’s a real product
  • Works on YouTube itself, on the web and on mobile
  • Regular feature updates as YouTube changes

Cons

  • Won’t grow your channel on its own
  • Search volumes are estimates, not YouTube’s figures
  • Heavy AI use can push you towards Max
  • Beginners can treat scores as gospel
  • Weaker than TubeBuddy for bulk edits and split tests
  • A lot on the dashboard, so it takes time to learn

The free plan takes two minutes to set up. When you’re ready for more, my link gets you Boost for $1 for your first month.

Who vidIQ is for, by channel size

Stage My recommendation Why
Brand new, under 1,000 subs Free plan Learn keyword research and find low-competition topics before paying for anything
Uploading weekly, 1K to 100K Boost Full research, trends and AI Coach pay off once you publish consistently
100K+ or several channels Boost or Max Max if you regularly run out of Boost’s 2,000 AI credits
Agencies and teams Enterprise Shared access, team roles and cross-channel reporting

It’s a strong fit if you’re research-led, you upload consistently, you’re a consultant or team who needs defensible decisions, or you’re a small channel trying to punch above your weight.

It’s less essential if you’re still deciding whether YouTube is for you, your real bottleneck is making videos at all, or you know you’ll obsess over scores instead of publishing. The free plan covers you until that changes.

Does vidIQ help you grow?

Yes, indirectly, and only if you act on it. vidIQ improves the quality of your decisions: which topics to chase, how to package them, which competitors to learn from and where the gaps are. Better decisions made every week add up to growth. But the tool doesn’t touch the two things that move the needle most: the video you make and the packaging around it.

So the workflow is: use vidIQ to choose a strong topic and angle, win the click with your thumbnail and title, keep viewers with a good video, and read the results in your analytics to improve the next one. Add the YouTube SEO checklist and you have a repeatable system. For evidence from real creators, read does vidIQ work?

How to get started with vidIQ

  1. Sign up: create a free account with the Google account that owns your channel.
  2. Connect your channel: approve access through YouTube’s standard permissions screen. You can remove it any time from your Google account.
  3. Install the Chrome extension: this is where you’ll spend most of your vidIQ time.
  4. Look around for 15 minutes: check which of your videos beat your average, then run five keyword searches in your niche.
  5. Use it on your next video: pick the topic from your research, draft titles with the AI, rewrite them in your voice, and check the SEO score before publishing.

Give the free plan a month before you upgrade. My vidIQ for beginners guide walks through each screen, and the Chrome extension guide explains every panel.

vidIQ FAQ

Is vidIQ worth it in 2026?

For most creators who upload every week, yes. Its keyword research, competitor tracking and AI Coach help you choose better topics and package videos better, and Boost usually pays for itself once you act on that. It’s a decision tool, not a growth shortcut.

Is the free version of vidIQ good enough?

The free plan is a real product, with niche trends, content ideas, AI Coach tips and 150 AI credits a month. It’s the right place to start. Most creators outgrow it once they upload regularly and keep hitting its limits, and that’s the signal to upgrade.

Which is better, vidIQ or TubeBuddy?

They lead in different areas. vidIQ is stronger for topic research, trends, competitor intelligence and AI help. TubeBuddy is stronger for bulk edits, templates and split tests inside YouTube Studio. Pick vidIQ if your problem is choosing what to make, and TubeBuddy if it’s managing a big back catalogue.

Does vidIQ actually help you grow?

Indirectly. It cuts guesswork, speeds up research and shows patterns you’d otherwise miss, which leads to better topic and packaging decisions. Growth still comes from the videos you make. Used well it speeds you up; used as a scoreboard it wastes time.

How much does vidIQ cost?

vidIQ has a free plan, paid Boost and Max plans billed monthly or yearly, a Boost plus Coaching option and custom Enterprise pricing. Prices are shown in local currency and change often, so check vidIQ’s plans page. Boost is available for $1 for the first month through my partner link.

Does vidIQ still have a Pro plan?

No. vidIQ no longer sells Pro. The current plans are Free, Boost and Max, plus Boost with Coaching and Enterprise. Reviews that still price Pro are out of date.

Is vidIQ safe to install?

Yes. vidIQ connects through YouTube’s standard sign-in and permissions screen, and you can remove its access from your Google account at any time. Install the extension only from the Chrome Web Store and only connect channels you own.

Can vidIQ get my channel banned?

No. vidIQ reads data and makes suggestions. It doesn’t upload, comment or take actions on your channel. YouTube judges what you publish, so the only risk comes from making misleading or spammy videos, whatever tool you use.

How accurate is vidIQ’s keyword data?

Search volumes are vidIQ’s estimates, because YouTube doesn’t share exact figures with outside tools. They’re most useful for comparing one keyword with another rather than as precise counts.

Can I use vidIQ on more than one channel?

Yes. You can connect several channels to one account and switch between them. Teams managing many channels should look at the Enterprise plan for shared access and reporting.

How do I cancel vidIQ?

Cancel from the billing section of your vidIQ account settings. You keep paid access until the end of the period you’ve paid for, then drop back to the free plan.

Final verdict: is vidIQ worth using?

4.5 / 5 ★★★★½

vidIQ is one of the strongest research and optimisation tools for YouTube. It won’t grow your channel by itself, and heavy AI users should budget for the credit tiers. For any creator who wants their decisions backed by data, it earns its place. Start free, upgrade when you hit the limits, and treat it as the research layer in a bigger growth system.
