Is Semrush Worth It in 2026? The Honest Answer (With the Maths)

Semrush costs from $139 a month. Whether that’s good value has nothing to do with the tool’s feature list and everything to do with what one extra customer or sale is worth to you. Here’s how to work it out in five minutes.

Last updated: 3 November 2026 · By Alan Spicer, YouTube Certified Expert

Part of the Semrush series.

My short answer: Semrush is worth it if your income depends on website traffic and you’ll act on what it finds each week. It isn’t worth it yet if your site earns nothing and you won’t publish or fix things. Most people know which camp they’re in by day three of the free trial.

Why listen to me? I’ve been a YouTube Certified Expert since 2017, self-employed for 20 years, and I pay for my own tools out of my own business, so “is it worth it” is a question I ask about every subscription. I gave Semrush 4.5 out of 5 in my full review.

⚡ QUICK ANSWER: Is Semrush worth it?

Semrush is worth it for businesses, bloggers and freelancers who earn from website traffic and will act on its findings, because one extra customer or a few affiliate sales a month often covers the $139 SEO plan. It isn’t worth it for sites earning nothing yet; use the free account and Search Console first.

My verdict: 4.5 / 5 ★★★★½

Worth it if your income depends on website traffic and you’ll act on the findings weekly. Not worth it yet for a site that earns nothing.

Who is Semrush worth it for?

Semrush is worth it for anyone who earns money when the right person finds their website. That covers service businesses, ecommerce stores, bloggers, affiliate site owners, freelancers doing SEO for clients and agencies.

You are… Worth it? Why
A service business wanting enquiries from Google Yes One extra client usually covers a year of the SEO plan
An ecommerce store Yes Product and category keywords map straight to sales
An affiliate or content site earning money Yes Finds keywords and gaps that turn into commissions
A freelancer or agency doing SEO for clients Yes Research, audits and reports are billable work
A brand being compared in ChatGPT and AI tools Yes, on Semrush One Tracks AI visibility you can’t see anywhere else
A hobby blog earning nothing Not yet Use the free account and Search Console
A YouTuber with no website No Use YouTube tools like vidIQ instead

How do you work out whether Semrush will pay for itself?

Divide the monthly cost by what one customer, sale or lead is worth to you. That tells you how many extra conversions a month Semrush needs to produce to break even.

**Break-even formula:** monthly plan price divided by profit per customer = customers needed per month to break even.

**Example, not a real client:** a bookkeeper earns £150 profit a month from each new client. The SEO plan works out at roughly £105 to £140 a month, depending on the exchange rate and whether VAT applies. One new client a month covers it. Two is profit.

**Example, not a real site:** an affiliate site earns about £40 per sale. It needs three or four extra sales a month from content Semrush helped plan.

Then ask whether you’ll act on the data. Semrush doesn’t rank pages; it tells you which pages to write and what to fix. If you’ll publish or improve a page every week, the maths usually works. If you won’t, no tool will.

What are the signs Semrush is worth it for you?

Semrush is likely worth it if three or more of these are true for you:

  • Your website already brings in some enquiries or sales, and you want more.
  • You publish or update content at least a few times a month.
  • Competitors outrank you and you don’t know why.
  • You’re guessing which topics to write about.
  • You’ve never run a technical audit of your site.
  • Customers mention finding businesses like yours through ChatGPT or Google’s AI answers.
  • You manage several sites or client sites.

It matters more now than a few years ago because getting the click is harder. Pew Research found Google users clicked a standard result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it didn’t. Picking the right keywords and tracking AI visibility helps you win the clicks that are left.

Not sure you’re ready for paid SEO tools?

I’ll tell you honestly on a free call. Sometimes the answer is “fix three things on your site first”, and that’s free.

  • You’re about to pay for a tool and want a second opinion
  • Your site gets traffic but no enquiries
  • You want SEO and YouTube growth working together

When is Semrush not worth it?

Semrush isn’t worth it when the data won’t turn into action. That’s usually one of four situations:

  • **The site earns nothing yet** and has fewer than 20 pages. Build the basics first with free tools.
  • **You won’t have time to publish or fix anything** for the next three months.
  • **Your audience is entirely on YouTube or social media** with no website.
  • **You only need one small job**, such as checking a few rankings, which a cheaper tool or Search Console can do.

For those cases, start with Google Search Console and the Semrush free account, which allows 10 reports a day. My Semrush alternatives guide lists cheaper and free options, and Semrush vs Ahrefs covers the main rival.

If it is worth it, which plan should you pay for?

Most people should start on the SEO plan at $139 a month and move to Semrush One only when AI visibility matters to their customers. Agencies and multi-site owners should look at Pro+.

Plan Monthly Worth it for
SEO $139 One business or up to 5 websites focused on Google
Semrush One Starter $199 Businesses that want to track how AI tools mention them
Pro+ $299 Agencies and owners of more than 5 sites

How do you find out for sure?

Run the 7-day free trial with a plan and count what you find. If the week produces more than a month’s worth of clear actions on your own site, it’s worth paying for. If it doesn’t, cancel before day seven and you won’t be charged.

My honest experience is that Semrush is easy to use, very easy to understand, and the 7-day trial gives you a great overview of whether it fits. My free trial guide has the day-by-day plan.

People also ask

Is Semrush worth it for beginners?

Yes, if you have a website you want to grow. Semrush is one of the easier SEO tools to learn, and Semrush Academy has free lessons. Start with Site Audit and the Keyword Magic Tool.

Is Semrush worth it for one website?

Yes, if that website earns money. The SEO plan covers up to 5 websites, so one site uses a fraction of the limits, but the research and tracking still pay off.

Is Semrush overpriced?

It’s expensive for hobby sites and good value for businesses that earn from search. Its entry plan is close to Ahrefs Lite in price, and it includes a free trial that Ahrefs doesn’t.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush worth it for small businesses?

Semrush is worth it for small businesses that want more customers from Google and will act on the findings. One extra customer a month often covers the SEO plan. If you won’t publish or fix anything, start with free tools.

Is Semrush worth it for bloggers?

It’s worth it for bloggers whose sites earn from ads or affiliate links, because it shows which keywords to target and where competitors win. For a new blog with no income, start with the free account.

Is Semrush worth it for affiliate marketers?

Yes, for affiliate sites with some traffic. Keyword Gap and the Keyword Magic Tool are how you find buyer-intent keywords competitors already earn from.

Is Semrush One worth the extra $60 a month?

Semrush One is worth it if your customers ask AI tools like ChatGPT for recommendations in your industry, because it tracks how often you’re mentioned. If they don’t yet, the SEO plan is enough.

Is Semrush worth it in 2026 with AI search?

Arguably more so. AI answers reduce clicks from Google, so choosing the right keywords and tracking AI visibility matter more. Semrush is one of the few tools that tracks both.

How quickly will Semrush pay for itself?

It depends on how fast you act. Technical fixes from Site Audit can help within weeks; new content usually takes a few months to rank. Plan on three months before judging results.

Can I cancel Semrush if it isn’t worth it?

Yes. Cancel during the 7-day trial and you won’t be charged, or cancel a paid plan at any time; Semrush says you can cancel, upgrade or downgrade whenever you like unless you have custom terms.
